What Vegetables To Plant In September

Sadly Winter is nearly upon us and September really is one of the last months that you can sow spring cabbages, they be can still be sown in the ground or in small modules ready for transporting outside if you are quick. You could try planting autumn varieties of vegetables such as carrots in between existing vegetable crops in your bed. The hardier carrot varieties will grow through the winter and be ready for next spring.
Sadly winter is now upon us and the last of our summer crops are fading out, with runner beans now beginning to fade away. So what can we look to grow this month? Well you can sow winter lettuce such as lambs lettuce, or arctic king indoors or in your greenhouse. Both these types of lettuce can be grown virtually all year round, with arctic king being good for salads in particular to set going this month.
Well so by now it is May and Summer is very much upon us, and by now you should have tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, chillies and peppers well under way. When it comes to Sweet corn plants they should now be well under way outside, they like a sunny position but the small plants do not cope with wind until they are larger and in a group act to deflect the wind - remember this! French beans and Broad beans should now be well advanced outside.
Well Summer is now upon us and if you got your tomato plants in nice and early then they should be well advanced in growth by now, with a first crop in July. By now it is warm enough to plant virtually everything straight in to the ground. However even though it is summer you should think ahead to Winter and start off winter cabbage seeds in the greenhouse this month, this is because they have a very long growing season and so they need an early start.
Well when it comes to busy months in the garden then March is where it really starts for me, as summer only seems a few short months away. If you planted Brussel Sprouts in February inside in propagators they can now be transported outside to grow in your greenhouse, like wise if you started growing cauliflowers inside then they can now also be transported out to the greenhouse (A frost heater is recommended for use overnight until all danger has passed). It is not too late to start growing celeriac and celery...
