Untreated Tap Water Is Dangerous for an Aquarium - Tip 3 of the Water Series

Tap water can be quite dangerous to the fish in your aquarium. In many areas of the world, the water that comes straight from the tap will kill fish rapidly and effectively. Even if the water delivered by your tap was originally taken from a lake or reservoir where fishing is available, so you know fish do live in it, once it leaves the lake, it must be treated by the local water company to keep it safe for human consumption.
Traditional water softeners do work effectively to soften your water. But after time, salt can corrode your galvanized pipes and wreak havoc on your water heater. And there's also the environmental and health concerns about salt in our groundwater and diet. One solution is a salt free water softener. It works a few different ways and vary drastically in price. Actually it is not a water softener, but a water conditioner. Basically it breaks up or changes the hard water minerals to where they won't stick to the insides of your pipes and flow freely out the faucet without a slippery feeling on your body.
